Deep Fried South – Photography by Tori Purcell

Deep Fried South is a series of landscape and interior photographs that show the complexities of American Southern culture. While every image is void of people, the spaces are a reflection of those who inhabit them. Collectively, the photographs reveal opposing characteristics: flashy/humble, sincere/superficial, comforting/haunting, familiar/foreign. The contradicting elements are products of southern history and the permutations of customs and traditions throughout that history.

Tori Purcell is a photographer and conceptual artist originally from Louisa, Virginia. Her artwork explores the notion that individual and collective identity is reflected in the everyday objects and environments that surround one’s life. She is currently the Assistant Chair of the Photography Department at Pratt Institute and a part-time Professor of Photography at Queensborough Community College in New York.
